Along the Susquehanna: How the River Shapes Our Region
at the York County Heritage Trust

Get two counties' perspectives on the Susquehanna River at the Lancaster County Historical Society and York County Heritage Trust. Their complementary exhibitions explore similar themes about the river while highlighting unique stories found on opposite shores.

The Susquehanna River has always been an important feature of the mid-Atlantic region. The river carries the teaming spring waters of upstate New York through the heart of Pennsylvania and south through Maryland into the Chesapeake Bay. The river has served civilization well, from early Native American settlements to the modern neighborhoods of Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Through the incredible collections of the York County Heritage Trust visitors will have the unique opportunity to see the Susquehanna River in a way that they have never seen it before.

Rare artifacts, including a flat-bottomed wooden fishing boat, detailed photographs and breathtaking paintings, will highlight the people who lived and worked along the Susquehanna River: People who called York County home.

You'll discover:

• The ways in which the Susquehanna River affects food and agricultural production in York County;
• The ways that the river has served as a barrier between warring factions during military conflicts and as a means of escape for slaves traveling on the Underground Railroad;
• How York Countians have managed to turn the river into a prosperous venture as a shipping channel and more recently as an energy source;
• How products of the Susquehanna sustained and expanded the region;
• How communities have flourished along the river's shores, creating generations of people connected to the Susquehanna.

These five themes will illustrate the importance of the Susquehanna River to York County and its influence on the development of the region.
